Producing Artistic Director

GAnderson.jpgGary Anderson founded Plowshares Theatre Company in March of 1989. Under his leadership Plowshares has grown to be the sixth largest African American theater company in the nation. As a director, Anderson has worked regionally in Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Atlanta and Houston. The Cleveland Plain Dealer, Detroit News, Oakland Press, and Detroit Free Press have nominated him repeatedly for Best Director. In 2000, Anderson received the Detroit Free Press’s Lawrence DeVine Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Theater. In May 2003, Anderson received the Michiganian of the Year Award from the Detroit News.

Mr. Anderson has held high official positions with several national Theatre organizations including the Black Theatre Network (BTN) from 1990-1994 and the National Conference on African American Theatre (NCAAT) from 1991-1992. Most recently, he served on the board of Theatre Communications Group (TCG). From 2002 through 2006 Anderson served as that organization’s Vice President.

A graduate of Wayne State University, Anderson holds both a bachelor and master degree of fine arts in theatre, specializing in directing.
