New Voices
Continuing to fulfill its mission to develop new plays by African American writers, Plowshares Theatre Company annually accepts entries to its New Voices Play Development Program. This program provides Plowshares with an opportunity to encourage and nurture promising new works from emerging and established playwrights.

Up to 6 plays will be chosen for development and presentation.
Each script will receive a staged reading production during the New Voices: A Festival of New Plays, and will include a series of summer master classes covering topics including playwriting and acting led by local and nationally known professional artists. Afterwards, Plowshares may produce the works in a subsequent season.

Winning playwrights will collaborate with some of the best in Detroit's professional theater community. Each playwright will be assigned a qualified director and a cast of experienced actors for an 8-week development period.

Also, following the staged readings, the authors will receive feedback from audience members during a discussion session moderated by Detroit area theatre critics. Travel stipends will be provided for those playwrights who live outside of the state of Michigan.

All entrants must be African American and hold permanent residence in the United States . All scripts must not have been previously optioned or produced by any other organization. Translations and adaptations are not accepted. Authors may send in as many scripts as they wish but only one per playwright will be chosen. Only plays directly addressing African American life or the African American experience will be considered.
